Rest Matters for Autism Moms | Why God Wants You to Sleep
Listen to the Why Rest Matters for Autism Moms episode:
Earlier today, God spoke to me in a way that stopped me in my tracks and it was clear:
“Ash, you need to focus on sleep.”
And as soon as I heard it, I knew this wasn’t just a message for me. This was for every mom who stays awake long after the rest of the house has settled. Every mom who carries appointments, fears, therapies, meltdowns, and hopes in her chest — all at once. Every mom who knows she needs rest but can’t figure out where in the world it’s supposed to fit.
Because if you’re raising an autistic child, you already know that sleep looks different in our homes. Nights are long. Mornings are unpredictable. Rest feels like a luxury you’re not allowed to have. And somewhere along the line, we started believing exhaustion was part of the calling.
But God never asked us to live empty.
His message to me today reminded me that sleep is not indulgent. It’s not laziness. It’s not something you earn once everything else is done.
Sleep is biblical. It’s sacred. And God created you to need it.
When Someone Says “You Just Need More Sleep”
If you’ve ever rolled your eyes when someone tells you to “just go to bed earlier,” trust me — same.
They say it like you can pause your child’s needs, silence your racing thoughts, or spontaneously grow three extra hours.
Caregivers don’t lack sleep because we don’t value it.
We lack sleep because we’re the person everything falls on.
No one talks about the mental load — the way autistic kids often attach deeply to one primary person, the one they feel the safest with. And as beautiful as that bond is, it can also mean you become the emotional engine of the whole household. You’re the predictable one, the safe one, the anchor. And that’s a gift — but it also means your nervous system never fully powers down.
You’re not tired because you’re doing something wrong.
You’re tired because you’re doing everything right.
A Biblical Reminder of Why Rest Matters for Autism Moms
The verse God gave me was Ecclesiastes 5:12:
“The sleep of a laborer is sweet… but the abundance of the rich permits them no sleep.”
There is sweetness and peace in sleep — even in a life that’s messy and full of work. But when we keep chasing “more” — more control, more perfection, more productivity — we lose access to that sweetness.
Psalm 127:2 adds another layer:
“It is in vain that you rise early and go late to rest… for He gives to His beloved sleep.”
He gives His beloved sleep.
God gives rest because He loves you, not because you’ve finished everything.
Let’s Talk About Why Sleep Actually Matters
Here’s what most moms don’t realize:
While you sleep, your body is doing some of its holiest, most restorative work.
Your brain is processing stress, hormones are regulating, muscles and tissues are repairing, immune system strengthens, and your emotions reset and organize themselves.
Sleep is not “time off.”
It’s divine maintenance.
When we miss it — especially chronically — our bodies become overwhelmed. Anxiety spikes. Depression deepens. Irritability increases. Health declines. And the emotional regulation we desperately need as caregivers becomes harder and harder to access.
We aren’t built to operate without rest.
God literally wired it into our biology.
What This Looks Like in Real Life
I know how tempting it is to just push through.
Working late… waking at 3 a.m… finally dozing off again at 5… then up at 6:15… then parenting all day with no break… no nap… no silence.
And if you have a neurodivergent household, you’re probably also navigating:
- sensory overload
- rigidity
- unpredictable mornings
- medical needs
- constant vigilance
That’s not “just tired.”
That’s a nervous system that never shuts down.
And yet, God is still calling us to rest — not because He wants to add pressure, but because He wants to relieve it.
So Where Do You Even Start?
Not with a massive routine overhaul. Not with a strict bedtime chart. God rarely moves in giant leaps — He moves in invitations.
Start with one day a week.
One evening where you go to bed early and let the dishes sit.
One morning where you ask your spouse to take over.
One hour of quiet without guilt.
One nap.
One intentional pause.
You don’t need perfection to honor your body.
You just need willingness.
The Deeper Spiritual Truth
I know we carry the future in ways most people don’t understand.
We worry about what happens when we’re gone and carry fears no one sees.
We prepare for needs others will never experience.
But Isaiah 40:29–31 gives us the promise we cling to:
“He gives power to the faint… but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength.”
Renewal is not found in hustling harder.
It’s found in resting with God.
Your strength is not built through pushing.
It is built through pausing.
A Challenge for You
So here’s what I want you to ask yourself this week:
What would change if I allowed myself one night of real rest?
What would shift if I stopped seeing sleep as something I must earn
and started seeing it as something God wants to give me?
Sleep is not selfish, optional, or a weakness.
Sleep is worship, trust, and obedience.
You are not meant to run on empty.
You are meant to be renewed.
And God is inviting you — today — to finally rest in Him.
