Halloween - God’s Plan

[Devotional #19] God’s Plans Are Bigger Than Our Caution

I never want to hold my children back from things, but making sure Maximus is safe, avoiding certain activities because of his rare disease, and keeping him comfortable to prevent an autistic meltdown. It’s a hard balance. That’s why, on Halloween, I hadn’t even planned to go trick-or-treating. Maximus really enjoyed passing out candy the previous year, and I was totally fine with doing that again.

Earlier that day, we were playing “trick-or-treat” at home when Maximus asked, “Today trick treat night?” When I told him yes, he lit up and talked about it all day—over and over and over again. I thought, Okay, we’ll go around the block. It’ll be great.

We loaded the boys up in their wagon and set off around the neighborhood. It was a lot of lifting and carrying since Max gets too tired to walk with one of his conditions, but somehow, we were out for nearly two and a half hours! Finnegan had the best time—collecting candy from strangers, opening chocolate after chocolate, and covering his face with melted brown smiles. And Maximus? He was so kind and polite, taking just one piece of candy at each house we visited. He usually yells at new people, but apparently with candy, anyone can win his heart.

That night showed me something important: no matter how much I want to control situations or protect him from potential meltdowns, Maximus will keep surprising me. And maybe that’s exactly what God is showing me too. We can try to control everything, to protect ourselves from being uncomfortable. But if we never try, we’ll never know. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll surprise ourselves too.

    Stay Mighty,

    Devotional of the Week

    Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.

That Halloween night reminded me of something deeper than candy buckets and melted chocolate. It reminded me how much I still try to control things out of fear. I wanted to protect Maximus from overstimulation and myself from disappointment, but God had other plans. He showed me that sometimes, the moments I avoid out of fear are the very ones where His goodness waits to surprise me.

Faith doesn’t always look like big, bold leaps. Sometimes it looks like saying yesto something small, like going around the block when you’d rather stay home. And in that obedience, God meets us. With joy, laughter, and peace that remind us He’s always working, even in the moments that scare us most.

When we loosen our grip, we don’t lose control. We give God room to move. And more often than not, He shows us that what we feared might break us is actually what grows us.

    Reflection

God’s plans often look different from ours. The moments we try to control out of fear are often the same places He wants to show us His goodness. When we let go, we don’t lose control. We make space for God to move in ways we couldn’t plan ourselves.

    Journal Prompt

What’s something you’ve been holding back from doing because of fear? Either for your child or yourself. What would trusting God with that situation look like this week?

    A Closing Prayer

    Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me that Your plans are always better than mine. Help me to release my fear and trust that You are guiding each step I take as a mother. When I want to hold back or protect too much, teach me to lean on Your understanding instead of my own.

Give me courage to step forward, even when I’m uncertain, and peace to know that You’re already ahead of me—clearing the path, steadying my heart, and filling our days with unexpected joy.

    In Jesus’ name,
    Amen.
