God Is Love: How Christian Autism Moms Can Restore Their Faith and Find Healing

Parenting an autistic or medically complex child is one of the most rewarding experiences — but it’s also one of the hardest. Endless appointments, sleepless nights, and constant worry can leave your heart heavy, your faith shaken, and your prayers feeling empty.

If you’ve ever whispered to God, “I don’t know if You’re even listening” — or even yelled, “Why is this happening?!” — you are not alone. Many Christian moms feel guilty or ashamed when their prayers don’t feel answered, or when doubt creeps in.

Here’s the truth: God is love — and He wants you to come to Him just as you are, even in your doubt, anger, or fear.

Listen to the episode here:

It’s Okay to Doubt

I grew up believing that if my prayers weren’t answered, or if I questioned God, it meant I was failing Him. That belief almost broke me.

When my son was diagnosed with autism, and later a rare medical condition, I felt completely overwhelmed. I would sit in the dark, exhausted after long hospital visits, and whisper:

“God… where are You? Why is this happening? Am I doing something wrong?”

Immediately, the shame hit. I thought, “I shouldn’t be saying this. God is going to be mad at me.”

But God isn’t fragile. He can handle your doubts, your anger, and your fear. In fact, He wants honesty.

Even Jesus cried out to God in His deepest anguish. On the cross, He said:

“My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46)

Jesus modeled raw, honest communication with God — and God didn’t reject Him. If Jesus could bring His anguish to God, so can we.

How to Pray Honestly and Restore Faith

Here’s how you can approach prayer in a way that restores faith, empowers you as a mom, and helps you feel God’s love.

1. Remember Who God Really Is — Love

1 John 4:8 says:

“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

God is love — not just in what He does, but in who He is. That love does not fail when your faith wavers. It doesn’t leave when you are frustrated or exhausted.

Reflection Prompt:

  • Take a moment to say aloud: “God, You are love. I believe You love me, even when I don’t feel it.”

2. Be Honest — Not Polished

Some of the most powerful prayers in scripture are messy. David wrote:

  • “How long, Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?” (Psalm 13:1)
  • “Why, Lord, do You stand far off? Why do You hide Yourself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1)

David was honest. He brought his full heart — anger, fear, grief — straight to God. And God called David a man after His own heart (1 Samuel 13:14).

Reflection Prompt:

  • Pause and ask yourself: What am I holding back from God?
  • Speak it aloud: “God, here’s what’s in my heart. I’m angry, I’m sad, I’m frustrated, I’m scared.”

3. Keep Showing Up

Prayer doesn’t have to be fancy or perfect. Romans 8:26 reminds us:

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”

Even sighs, whispers, or tears are heard in heaven.

Reflection Prompt:

  • Set a timer for five minutes. Sit quietly with God.
  • Let your heart speak: “God, I don’t know how to pray right now, but I’m here.”

4. Anchor in Scripture and Truth

When life feels overwhelming, God’s Word reassures us:

  • “Cast all your cares on Him, because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
  • “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
  • “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Reflection Prompt:

  • Pick one verse. Write it down and read it aloud.
  • Let it anchor your soul and remind you that struggle doesn’t define your relationship with God.

5. Pray as a Mom: Honest, Real, Empowered

You can pray for your child, your family, and your own healing at the same time. Try praying:

  • “God, I’m exhausted. I don’t know how to do this today.”
  • “God, I feel scared about the future, but I trust You.”
  • “God, please help me see You in this moment, even when it hurts.”

Reflection Prompt:

  • Pause and pray aloud. Let the words flow naturally from your heart.

The more you practice honest prayer, the more you’ll feel God’s love. The more empowered you’ll feel as a mom.

You Are Loved and Empowered

Remember, Christian autism moms:

  • Doubt doesn’t make you less faithful.
  • Anger doesn’t make you less Christian.
  • Raw, honest prayers are exactly what God wants.

Even Jesus showed us it’s okay to question, cry out, and express anguish. God sees your heart and knows your struggles. God loves you just as you are.

Reflection Prompt:

  • Take a deep breath and whisper to God: “I trust You, even in my doubt. I am Your child. Thank You for loving me just as I am.”
