Why My Child? What Jesus Says About A Child’s Autism Diagnosis
Have you ever wondered if your child’s diagnosis was somehow your fault?
Maybe you’ve whispered the question no one wants to say out loud:
“Why my child?”
You love your child deeply. And sometimes, in the quiet moments… after the appointments, the meltdowns, the sleepless nights… the guilt creeps in. You replay the pregnancy, the prayers, the what-ifs. You wonder if you missed something or did something wrong.
If that sounds familiar, friend, you’re not alone.
And more importantly: God is not punishing you.
When the Disciples Asked the Same Question
In John 9:1–3, Jesus and His disciples encounter a man who had been blind since birth. The disciples ask the question that so many of us mothers have whispered in our hearts:
“Rabbi, who sinned — this man or his parents — that he was born blind?”
They were trying to make sense of suffering, just like we do.
But Jesus’ response flips the narrative completely:
“Neither this man nor his parents sinned… but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.”
In that one statement, Jesus dismantles generations of guilt.
He shows us that our children’s differences aren’t divine punishment. They’re divine purpose.
Your Child’s Diagnosis Is a Calling
It’s easy to internalize guilt when your child’s life looks different from what you expected. But what if God chose you because He trusted you to carry this specific calling with your child?
Your child’s diagnosis doesn’t mean God is disappointed in you.
It means His glory is going to shine through you, and through your child, in ways you can’t yet imagine.
What God Wants You to Know
This truth can take time to settle in your heart, especially when you’re walking through the daily challenges of autism or medical complexity. But here’s what Scripture reminds us:
You were chosen with intention.
“You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.” — Psalm 139:13–14
Your weakness is where His strength shines.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
Even the hardest days are not wasted.
“We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him.” — Romans 8:28
You don’t have to earn God’s approval.
“My servant Job has spoken rightly of Me.” — Job 42:7
God isn’t keeping score of your mistakes. He’s writing a testimony that reveals His mercy, power, and faithfulness. Even in the middle of the mess.
Let Go of the Guilt
If you’ve ever prayed through tears, wondering if you caused your child’s suffering, I want you to hear this clearly:
You didn’t break your child. You’re being built for purpose.
God’s grace still covers every moment and His glory still shines through every difference.
So take a deep breath, mama.
You can lay down the guilt.
Because your child’s story is already part of something sacred.
